Bishop calls for National Prayer Day for athletes after deaths of Kelvin Kiptum, Charles Kipsang

The Anglican Church of Kenya Bishop in Mbeere Diocese Dr Moses Masamba has called for a concerted effort by stakeholders to organize a National Prayer Day for athletes.

While speaking at Christ the King ACK church Ciambugu in Mbeere North, during the official concentration and dedication of the church’s new building, Masamba said prayers were very essential to the athletes since they perform heavy tasks.

The Bishop stated that it was disheartening to lose World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum and Charles Kipsang in span of two weeks, stressing that there is a need to pray for the athletes and dedicate them to God.

“We need to pray for our marathoners, they are doing a noble task for our country. Setting these World Records is not a simple thing, there is a need to pray for them,” Bishop Masamba said.

Further, the Bishop urged the government to consider meeting some requests by the athletes including security.

“The honour that these athletes have brought to our country is big, let’s give them security,” he stated.

His sentiments were echoed by Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi who said it was unfortunate how the athletes were dying miserably, noting that there is a need for divine intervention for all.

Mundigi affirmed his commitment to continue pushing for the prayers.

The country was subjected to mourning following the death of Marathon World Record holder Kelvin Kiptum and Charles Kipsang who collapsed and died in Cameroon mountain run.
