The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has withheld 2023 KCSE results for Matinyani Boys Secondary School in Kitui West sub-county, Kitui county.
In the previous year, the school had outperformed others in the Eastern region, securing the position of the best-performing school in KCSE results with a minimum grade of B+ and a minimum score of 9.94.

However, shock set in for teachers, students, and parents when the 2023 results, which were expected to be accessed through the individual student portal, were withheld by KNEC due to allegations of exam cheating.
The incident comes in the midst of ongoing investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), following accusations against the school’s principal, Nelson Mureithi, and his deputy for allegedly promoting examination irregularities among students during the exam period.
The two teachers have been summoned for questioning.
According to the results released by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu results of at least 4,109 candidates who took their KCSE exams in 2023 are currently withheld.
“The results of the remaining 4,109 candidates who were suspected to have engaged in examination irregularities have been withheld pending the completion of investigations into their cases,” Machogu stated during the release of the exam at Moi Girls Eldoret.
A total of 903,260 candidates sat for last year’s exams, which was conducted from October 23 to November 2023.
A total of 7,254 candidates got A- (minus), 18,078 attained B+ (plus), 36,728 got B (plain) while 78,343 got C+ (plus).
In total, 201,133 candidates, representing 22.27 per cent, scored C+ and above are eligible for direct entry to the university.
